Department of Commerce

Estd. 1964

The Commerce Department has a rich history of academic offerings that have evolved over the years to meet the changing educational landscape. It began its journey in 1965 with the introduction of a university entrance course, laying the foundation for a tradition of excellence in commerce education.

In 1967, the department embarked on its pioneering venture, launching the three-year Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree program in the general stream. This marked the beginning of a longstanding commitment to providing comprehensive education in commerce.

The year 1980 witnessed a significant milestone with the inception of the B.Com Honours program in Accountancy, further enriching the academic offerings of the department and catering to the specialized needs of students.

Expanding its horizons, the department introduced a two-year B.Com degree program in 1979, extending educational opportunities to a broader spectrum of learners. This initiative continued until 1997, contributing to the department's legacy of accessible and flexible educational pathways.

In 1976, the department took another progressive step by introducing the Higher Secondary Course in Commerce, fostering academic growth at the pre-university level until 2003.

With a focus on contemporary educational methodologies, the department reintroduced the three-year B.Com degree program in the General stream in 1997-1998, reaffirming its commitment to academic excellence and relevance.

In alignment with the evolving educational landscape and the principles outlined in the National Education Policy, the department ushered in a new era in 2017. It introduced the three-year B.Com Honours and B.Com General programs, following the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) pattern, to enhance curriculum flexibility and student engagement.

Building upon this foundation, the department embraced the transformative vision of the National Education Policy in 2023. It transitioned to a four-year B.Com Honours and General program, aligning its academic offerings with contemporary educational paradigms and global standards.

Throughout its illustrious journey, the Commerce Department has remained steadfast in its commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and student-centric learning, shaping the future leaders of the commerce and business landscape
